From a story (opens in new tab) by Ian Bogost

What fraction visible at basically every U.S. gas station originated as a parsimonious response to a 1932 one-penny gas tax?

And by the way, did you know that one U.S. state bans the little latches on gas nozzles that allow for hands-free pumping? After Massachusetts ended a prohibition in 2015 and Hawaii amended its fire code in 2021, New York became the only place that makes pumpers keep a hand on the handle.

Even in Jersey can you flip down the latch. Well, not you—you’re not legally allowed to pump your own gas there—but your state-mandated station attendant is free to tie his shoelaces, juggle, maybe play some patty-cake through the driver’s-side window.

See you tomorrow!
